Philly is all about expanding the items you can recycling in the single-stream curb side recycling. With residential recycling rates up to 20% (from under 10% in 2008), they can only go higher with the recently added “carton” category added a few months ago!
“Cartons” include the waxy coated paper such as refrigerated containers for milk and juice, and cartons that contain soup, broth, soy milk, wine, and other liquids.

Every March since I can remember, Rob and I have gone to the Philadelphia Flower Show and this year was no exception… here’s a few of the interesting items from our visit today.
The theme was Hawaii so here’s some ikea furniture sinking in lava:

Fun exterior furniture…. If only our deck was bigger:

Amazing jewelry created from plants and seeds:

And of course can’t leave without some beautiful flowers… This year, a selection of roses in three complementary shades, arranged by Rob:

Always a fun evening looking at flowers!

Rob & I, along with plenty of other volunteers and hundreds of hardcore runners, braved the pre-snow freezing rain for the Southwest Center City 5k Run this morning! It goes up, down, and around our neighborhood, including down Madison Sq. Here we are looking sorta-warm in our event staff shirts. Including my glam faux-rebroken-leg resting stool (not suggested for outdoor use):

I think Rob pulled off the shirt-over- jacket very well. Way to match the mums!

All in all a fun time. Runners in Halloween costumes & serious jogging strollers were the best distraction from the cold rain!!
Happy Friday! I wanted to pass on a recent discovery that PlanPhilly has a new blog dedicated to all that is happening in Philly, called Eyes on the Street (Jane Jacobs reference?). It’s loaded with photos & articles from around town, and you can search for articles by whatever issue interests you the most at that moment, like Bicycling, Design, Zoning or Technology. You can even sign up to contribute if you’re into that sort of thing. I would recommend checking it out:
Our block’s official red ribbon arrived in the mail today. The official Award Certificate also arrived, with the following inscription:
“Not your typical city block, 2300 Madison Square, with no vehicular traffic, is an island garden space that runs the entire length of the block. Each resident cares for the space in front of their home. It appears that there is 100% participation along this historic community property. Most admirable!”
We’re so excited for our block! Hopefully inspires everyone to get out and enjoy the garden block life even more.
Happy Saturday! Today is the PHS Fall Festival at the Navy Yard- when our block will be awarded second prize for Greenest Block for the city gardens competition. Check out the PHS schedule of events here:
