So our tulips think it’s spring:

And this is one of the other confused gardens on the block:

Gorgeous perfect coral roses growing out of a dead looking bush…

Permit sticker changing! Almost as difficult as it looks:

The building in the background is hilarious to me…

Happy Random Saturday!

Rob & I, along with plenty of other volunteers and hundreds of hardcore runners, braved the pre-snow freezing rain for the Southwest Center City 5k Run this morning! It goes up, down, and around our neighborhood, including down Madison Sq. Here we are looking sorta-warm in our event staff shirts. Including my glam faux-rebroken-leg resting stool (not suggested for outdoor use):

I think Rob pulled off the shirt-over- jacket very well. Way to match the mums!

All in all a fun time. Runners in Halloween costumes & serious jogging strollers were the best distraction from the cold rain!!

Homeowner workshops are back in our neighborhood, with a variety of new courses (including plaster repair!) for those who are interested. At this point, Rob & I could probably TEACH the masonry class, if we weren’t so busy fixing our own masonry. But I still may stop by the plaster class to pick up a few hints… here was one attempt at plaster washering:

Register now and come run, walk, or stroller-push through our neighborhood!

It was a beautiful morning for getting together with neighbors to clean up the block.

About a dozen neighbors made it out for our clean-up garden party.

We weeded & swept the sidewalk,

Weeded the garden,

And trimmed the bushes.

Thanks to everyone who came out!!! The garden looks great!

This Saturday morning  is the Garden Party on Madison Square!   We hope to see everyone out enjoying the weather and sprucing up for the SOSNA Streetscape Competition – judges will be by Sunday to evaluate our hard work!

Tomorrow it’s time to Rally for Your Alley – sponsored by SOSNA.  If you’re in the neighborhood and have some “before” photos- send them over to SOSNA today and get your clean on tomorrow – you could win some cash for your block!

Tonight is National Night Out and acording to the SOSNA website, the participation requirements sound pretty low-key:  The SOSNA Safety Committee will be out with members of the South of South Town Watch distributing CFL Light Bulbs for your front stoop light.  To participate, all you have to do is hang out on your front stoop with your neighbors, and keep your stoop lights on!

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT is designed to:

  • Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
  • Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs;
  • Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
  • Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.

Our neighborhood and block feel mighty safe but it sounds like a great excuse to hang out with friends & neighbors on your stoop :)
