There was one more electrical item to cross off the list for the orange room (literally, we keep a list going on the iphone/ ipad at all times) – the intercom. Gaping black hole, wired & roughed out weeks ago. Here’s Rob’s iphone pic of my iphone taking a pic of the hole:

We’ve posted the process before but basically you run the cat5 wire then pull the end apart:

Then wire it up to the speaker and attach it to the metal frame in the wall:

Speaker/intercom, light switches, fan control. We moved the programmable thermostat to our bedroom during this project “since the hall ceiling was open”. After:

It always looks worse before it looks better, and in this guest room at least, it’s starting to look better!

So I doubt I’ll win any awards for my tape installation, but here’s the most exciting use of painters tape currently in our house- holding up some protective plastic around our hvac unit while we continue to run our heat while about to undertake some serious little bedroom demo. The return is in the hall so it can still get (cleanish) air.

Meanwhile Rob updated the linen closet fixture cord. Here’s the after- short & sweet:

Before- long and distracting:

Also did a final round of paint touch-up in the closets before hanging the doors!

Finally putting everything back together…

Are lights are all wired up and working again.

We have a light in the upper closet.

Here is the switch in the linen closet jamb.

To automatically turn on this light!

We also wired up the receptacles in the baseboard and ceiling smoke detector.

Hello light!

Welcome to Mad Sq:

Step right up:

The shadows are pretty amazing. We’re going to switch the 40 watt bulbs to 25 watt as soon as we find some.

Soon enough the ceiling will be gold, walls blue. Check out the giant lightbulb shadow, and the bling:

Lovely!

Our entry hall light is a temp fixture we had from our apartment:

Which does a fine job of lighting our way in the house each evening (ok in this pic the power’s already off):

So you may have guessed already what the secret project was… We bought a new fixture for the front hall! Tonight we took the temp fixture down:

And wired up the new one which we received in record time:

It was definitely one of those saw it on Monday, ordered it Tuesday and installed it Friday decisions, which frankly never ever happens. The front hall light fixture was not even on our radar… but sometimes home reno projects go out of order a bit. After pictures to follow soon!

Three wonderful foot-candles total from out three restored vintage ceiling lights in our hallway!

So all this “final electric” talk but showing temporary fixtures could leave anyone confused. What we’re trying to say is: the electrical inspector approved our electric rewiring! Certain things must be done to meet their approval (all outlets, light fixtures, switches complete, etc). What a great birthday present to be ‘done’ with the electric!

…Almost as exciting as our trip to the zoo!

The outlets and switches are all wired, but that’s not all!

The covered-in-protective-plastic sconces. The wires in the middle are hdmi and Ethernet cables for a “future” tv. By “future” I’m pretty sure hdmi will be obsolete before we put a tv in here but wires are there nonetheless.

And the temporary central fixture… A ceramic base. Decidedly not glam; still better than bulb on wire we’ve been rocking for a year:

Sorry for the weird photo- it’s difficult to take iPhone pics of a a bare bulb.
