Well we now have locksets on all the upstairs doors! Even the bathroom.

Here is the bathroom at the beginning of the evening:

Once I prepped the door and chiseled out the strike plate, I typically paint the inside of the strike hole black to clean it up.

And all done:

Unlike all the rest of the door hardware on this floor, we went with brushed nickel to correspond with the bathroom finishes.

After work today we went on an ICA behind the scenes tour of the Union League and then back home to work on the house… The league has a fascinating history and a great club house (which is also only a few years older then our house … 1865 vs. 1872)! Look it up some day if you have time.

So back to our odds and ends to finish up the 2nd floor.

The inside of the air return in the hall was spray painted black for a consistent look,

And our salvaged and refinished grille finally installed. The finish works well with the ceiling and light fixture colors.

Kelly also touched up the polyurethane on the floor in both bedrooms and the hall.

This is where we patched in and refinished the floor when we moved the bedroom door location to add the closets. You would never know…

In addition we did some more paint touch-ups, reinstalled the smoke detectors, and lastly installed new hooks. The bathroom and our bedroom got these handy and clean line fold down hooks. When not in use they are very discrete and almost go away.

Here was a new cute elephant hook for Kelly’s purse in our closet.

At this rate we may even be able to set up our guest bed tomorrow night.

We are almost done with the 2nd floor project so we can move on to the Living Room! So time to finish up the hardware…

Back Bedroom Door:

Done,

I have heard it’s nice to have handles on bedroom doors!

Next Up… Orange Bedroom closet door. This was a completely new prep

And done!

Thank you Uncle Wayne for all the salvaged door knobs! They look great.

Okay so it wasn’t actually raining today but I pretended it was and forced myself to finish painting all the newly hung upstairs doors, and do all the random touch ups. I did throw open the windows and turn up the tunes so it was sort-of enjoying the nice weather. Doors!

More doors!

After painting around hinges all day, I went against all my natural instincts and painted the access door hinges the wall color. They were bright white with a blue tinge and it would have bothered me forever if they stayed that way. Unpainted on the right:

All painted. Much better:

By the way, I’m matching the walls again:

Happy Saturday!

Our orange bedroom door was missing something… Something round…

The hardware! It’s actually about as mismatched as you an get but you’d never know by looking at it. Mortise lockset: reused from our house. Door knobs: cleaned up salvaged pieces given by Rob’s uncle. Escutcheon (part with the key hole): “new” pieces installed in bright brass by previous owners, spray painted by us. New and improved, for way less than a brand new ‘vintage’ looking mortised lockset:

Thumb turn lock: original to door, paint removed as much as possible without the crockpotting method. The keyhole itself isn’t operable right know because we have no key.

These pieces we bought at the hardware store. Still need to do some touch up painting:

Whew, one door down! Bathroom and guest bedroom still to go.

So tonight it was finally time to close in the 2nd floor air handler. Here the opening is prep’ed for the hinges.

To improve acoustics we attached a thick felt carpet pad, that also had a rubber backing, to the inside of the enclosure door. Felt is great at absorbing sound energy, and the change of densities between the felt, rubber, and wood door also help reduce sound transfer. I knew what kind of door backing we wanted and it turned out a carpet pad was the least expensive way to buy bulk felt.

The door of course will work in concert with the rest of the enclosure which is lined with batt insulation. We want this to be a pleasant bedroom so minimizing HVAC noise is critical.

Here the door is finally hung. It hinges up for service access and will have a support member similar to a car hood to hold it open.

All done, including latches at the corners, and all covered up!

Kelly also got some painting done tonight on the doors while I fussed with the above door installation.

We are slooooowly getting back into renovating and finishing the house. : )

Three doors up in 24 hours? Oh yeah. Rob hung three closet doors in the orange room this weekend. Start with the routing and chiseling on the clothes closet:

Once that was hung, he moved up to the upper closet:

Rout, chisel, attach hinges, hang door:

Hotness. Even the cute little thumb turns are in on the upper doors:

Yay:

Needs some paint, but door hardware is a pain so it’s awesome to have these all in.

Hi! I’m standing on the walk-up and still can barely reach:

Tonight we did a bunch of random stuff but one important thing was test fitting the repurposed door/ mechanical soffit access panel. It fits perfectly, so now we’ll paint and prep for hinges:

We also looked at the sizes of the shades in proportion to the room for the three pendant fixtures on our light fixture short-list.

We think we found a winner, so we’ll be ordering it ASAP. Spoiler alert: it’s NOT from ikea…. Hmmm.
